Looks like an An-12 to me...

From the way the story reads, the Al-Safat is a small trainer. The aircraft in the background of the accompanying photo looks like an An-12.

I believe the word "launch" in this case refers to the start of production, not an actual aircraft leaving the ground.

Pics of the Safat-01 here. 80% of parts made in Sudan, 20% from Russia and China.

This SAFAT 01 looks like an older version of the Piper Super Cub.

The earlier link doesn't work for me.

Another link for SAFAT

Scrap heap challenge, collect all of the parts of AN-12 scattered around Sundan and you come up with SAFAT 01 if thats the photographed aircraft.

Presume it must be something else. Just Googled and its a Piper cub replica!

The airframe is made of balsa wood & the wings are of paper mache - that's why it's so cheap.

balsa wood - and paint

Yep but the paint job keeps the whole thing together long enough to take the photo!

Now what happens when they put the engine in, possibly an optional extra (another $15,000) not good at reading Sudanese fineprint.

Pre ordered anyone? Need to know the delivery charges? a couple of smilies for rainboe.
