What Are These?

Hello

Just a question on something I have seen dotted around the airport.

They look like wire mesh fences but are not very wide and slope at an angle behind the aircraft stands and are alternately red and white.

Do they take some of the heat when the engines are starting/plane being pushed back or what are they for?

Cheers

They're blast fences, to deflect the jet blast or propellor wash from aircraft and therefore protect whatever is behind them. (Picture taken from Airport Technology)

Thanks loads reportyourlevel.

Yes those are the ones I meant. I had an idea thats what they were for but I wasnt very sure.

I take it there is only the basic amount of jet blast or prop wash as only enough power is needed to taxi but still wouldnt fancy being behind it!

Cheers again

A lot of different factors will determine how much thrust an aircraft will need to move off and taxi (including engines, payload, turning, slope etc).

More significant blast fences are placed in areas where higher thrust engine tests are run, and these are generally well away from other buildings and vehicles.

No issues being behind one, donnlass, they are quite efficient
