High-altitude half a figure eight

1600hrs sth bound today on the old UA25 around Niton an airliner type unknown [Airbus 318/9/20?] turned to port and came off airways doing a very large half a figure eight and then headed back from whence he came.
Anyone have any info.?
I'm really nosey I know but intrigue has got the better of me. Forgetting his sandwiches is not an option.
