Unhappy No SMR at Luton

Rumour has it that the surface movement radar at Luton is u/s and cannot be repaired. I understand that this piece of kit is vital in thick fog so that the controllers know just where the aircraft are on the ground.. .. .I has also been rumoured that whilst it is out of service the movement rate per hour in total will drop to less than 12 during very dense fog, to avaid "Another Milan".. .. .Is this true?. . . . [ 27 March 2002, 19:46: Message edited by: Buster the Bear ]

The ground radar was a free gift from the company that fitted the CAT 3b ILS around 10 years ago.

So is it unserviceable or not?. .. .I believe is was unserviceable sometime last week and the runway movement rate was significantly reduced by ATC at Luton.. .. .I also heard that it was the responsibility of the "airport authority" (aka TBI) to get it fixed but they "didn't consider it to be a priority".. .. .

Indeed, if it were broken, shurely that should be NOTAM'd?. .. .Also, it's not as if Luton has *that* many taxiways to affect the flow rate...? Two by my recollection...
