Cactus -

US Airways merged with Air West...
Air West call sign was Cactus.
They agreed on keeping the name US Airways, sounds nicer and important.
And to make the Air West people happy, keep the Cactus call sign.
I still think of them as UseAir... or Youzair, whichever way you want to spell.
xxx

Happy contrails

Similar story with Thomas Cook. When Thomas Cook absorbed MyTravel, they adopted their callsign of Kestrel and stopped using their original one of 'Topjet.'

US Airways merged with Air West...
Air West call sign was Cactus.

It was America West, who are the predominant partner after the merger but, as stated, it was decided US Airways was the better name to keep.

Not to hear the USAir guys tell it, they are the top dogs, sadly, they are...wrong.
And, poor losers.

The Cactus callsign came into use within the last 6-8 months.

I seem to remember a notice via Eurocontrol advising that US Airways would be Cactus in the late summer/early Autumn time.
