Question on female pilots
Just out of curiosity, roughly what proportion of women pilots at airlines such as BA, easyJet and Ryanair are captains? I ask because although I have been on just a couple of flights where the F/O has been a woman, the captain has always been a guy.
I am wondering, therefore, whether there are fewer women captains than F/Os? If this is the case, is the reason to do with commands coming mid-career and women not having flown professionally for a sufficiently long period of time?
Interested to know what you think.

Well I guess female pilots aren't as common as male ones fullstop, let alone captains. I don't know about the carriers you mentioned specifically, although here in New Zealand there are definitely more male capts than female. I know that on the last flight I flew (I jumpseated) the capt was male and the F/O was female, although she was pilot flying for the flight. Hope this is kind of helpful in some way.

Nick,
I would recommend contacting BA, Easyjet and Ryanair directly. Ask them how many pilots and women Captains they have. They would probably be happy to give you that information.
Just guessing, at our company, 1500 pilots 6% or 7% are women and they are probably split evenly between Captain and FO. When I was a FO I flew with just about all the women Captains on our type. With the exception of one (average) all were top caliber. Several of them I would have put in the top 1% - 2% at the airline. In fact I preferred flying with them to flying with most of the guys.

Similar situation at my company - somewhere around 6-7%.
The ratio of female captains to FOs might be pretty equal in most of the loco airlines, simply because of a relatively short average time to command. In the old legacy carriers it might be skewed towards the greater percentage of FOs simply because it takes so much longer to get a command in those airlines, and I suspect the numbers of women coming into aviation now is higher than it was maybe only 10 to 15 years ago.

Had a very pleasant flight to AGP (Malaga) by Monarch from Manchester with an all female sharp end. Do Monarch usually roster the same team together or not?
