I agree - if the passengers saw it, it must be correct.
Let's not forget, the customer is always right.
Sometimes, in fact, when I have a really tough command decision to make, I often delay my decision until I've had a chance to ask the passengers what they think I should do.
Recently, on a Cat3 approach, we didn't see anything at decision ... but because I am both CRM and cutomer minded, I asked the First Officer to take control while I carried out a survey of the passengers.
The cabin crew very kindly agreed to carry out a poll for me, and the result was:
87% Shoot back up into the sky dramatically
10% What could possibly go wrong, let's continue, I have a meeting
3% I paid £6.78 + tax for this ticket, I demand to speak to the captain now
If this case, I did agree with the pasengers, and so I turned to the First Officer and said "Shoot back up, I say again, Shoot back up, acknowledge".
Funny ... I haven't flown with that FO since ...
