Chimbu Chuckes:

WHAT IS WRONG WITH TRISLANDERS!!!

To the rest:

Like DO28 says, if you choose to live near an airport like JFK, then you are bound to get a high level of 'noise pollution' in your area.
What difference is 2 concorde flights per day going to make over constant sounds of MD-83's, B747's and the like going to make? None at all!

If Concorde upsets one or two people in the USA then they won't hesitate about suspending the services, after all, it's a European aircraft. Not American. That would be an entirely different story!

Trislander.

It is interesting that the US has so many local noise, vehicle emission and other regulations and yet will not ratify the Kyoto treaty. I guess they just do not wish to be told what to do by the rest of the world.

That would be fine except they insist on telling the rest of the world how to run it's affairs!

OK - reasons to admire the USA...

Apollo space program - respect!

F4, 14, 15, 16, 18, 22 - respect!

More efficient industry than any other nation - respect!

Spending 2x as much per head on defence as the UK and using the assets in genuine efforts to bring peace to other parts of the world - respect!

Improving domestic beers out of sight in the last 10 years. Icehouse is about my favourite beer in the world - respect!

Having parts of the country where crime is low and people are friendly - respect

Upholding the right of a citizen to defend his family and property with deadly force - respect! We are just too chicken #### about this and parts of our cities are worse than the old wild west as a result.

Personally, I have enjoyed friendships with a lot of really great Yankee aviators and never met one I did not like and respect.

Cheers Uncle Sam

Hey Throber,
Don't forget to add the Hush-kit argument into your equation!

Noisy old hushkits not OK according to Europe, noisy old Concorde OK!

There may be more than one agenda at work in these arguments.

Possible Return of Fast, Noisy Concorde Draws Cheers and Jeers in New York

NEW YORK (AP) -- Well-heeled travelers welcomed news that British Airways hopes to resume supersonic service with its refurbished Concorde this summer. But that's not the reaction from some who have no intention of flying on the sleek plane.

"If you were in your house when the Concorde was taking off, you'd see all of the windows rattle," said Mario Mancuso, who lives a half-mile from Kennedy International Airport. "It's the closest that a plane can get to committing assault and battery."

The world's only supersonic commercial aircraft were grounded after one flown by Air France crashed last summer near Paris and killed 113 people. Authorities believe debris on the runway punctured one of the plane's high-pressure tires, which blew a hole in a wing fuel tank and started a fire.

But now British Airways and Air France have made safety modifications and British Airways conducted a test flight last week.

The British carrier says it hopes to resume flying its Concordes commercially by late summer and Air France has indicated it hopes to resume service by autumn. Each would initially fly one daily roundtrip to Kennedy.

At $10,000 per roundtrip, the Concorde is not for everyone. But the plane crosses the Atlantic in three and a half hours, about half the time it takes a conventional airliner.

"You don't have to adjust your body," said Raoul Felder, the divorce lawyer whose clients include New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. "You're ready to rock and roll when you get there and then you're ready to come back."

"You leave in the morning, you arrive in the morning," said Philip Suarez, a television producer and restaurateur in New York and London. "And you arrive as close to fresh as possible."

The Concorde carries just 100 passengers, making it less fuel-efficient than a jumbo jet, and it is louder than any other airliner operating in the United States.

The roar of a Concorde measures 111 to 115 decibels, four times as loud as today's Boeing 747s, said U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Democrat whose district includes neighborhoods near Kennedy Airport.

Weiner has introduced legislation to ban the Concorde from U.S. airspace unless it could be brought into compliance with the 1990 Airport Noise and Capacity Act, which currently exempts the Concorde.

Experts say the Concorde's engines can't be muffled, and Weiner acknowledged that his bill would end Concorde flights.

"This is not going to have a serious adverse impact on our ability to get around," he said. "The super-elite who benefit from this should not trump everyone else."

In a Republican-controlled House, Weiner's bill is likely to fail -- as have earlier efforts to block the Concorde.

And the noise complaints don't bother Concorde fans such as Hans Hollander, an aviation trade show consultant from Harrison, N.Y., who has flown the supersonic transport 528 times and will be back on board once service resumes.

"The only time you hear this noise is for a few seconds on takeoff," he said. "I can assure you that there are buses in Manhattan that cause more noise than the Concorde does."

Red face

Perhaps those homeowners near Laguardia and JFK that have been there since 1960 are entitled to moan - a bit.

Anyone else should realise: Gee, if I live close to an airport, it will get noisy.

Any questions?

It is an airport. Surprise.....

Back under rock, rant over, awaiting incoming.
