Spotting & Photography
I'm interested in photography and ofcourse most of all aviation photography. I look at hundreds of images at airliners.net and my crappy 4.1Mp point and shoot camera just won't cut it... So, I'm guessing there would have to be someone here that is well educated on this subject and can point me in the right direction.
My budget is is tight, so I'm going to say <$450. Thats still alot of money to me though.
If it helps I want to take normal photos, just about everything to do with av, wouldn't mind high zoom and don't mind 2nd hand. Oh, and I would like to take long exposure photos, astro etc.

I use a Canon 350D which is an excellent camera. If just photographing aircraft the 1GB Memory card can squeeze a lot of pics on it. The battery lasts a long time too,not like changing AA/AAA size batteries. I have a 100-300mm lens and it has the range for most things.
I am thinking of upgrading next year to another Canon DSLR with a screen at the back,simply because I am taking an interest in Digiscoping (attaching a telescope to my camera) for high flying heavies that go over my house going North to Pole Hill before they head West towards the States/Canada
But overall I recommend it.

Forget about seeing airliners.net as the ultimate site to get your photos on. There's so much fun in aviation photography - too much to let yourself go out and shell out hundreds of cash for a new camera just to get accepted on the site.
I have photo equipment worth 10k plus euros and still stopped uploading to A.net. Check out flickR for example, you'd be surprised how many (GREAT!) aviation images are on there.

Lamb of God, wherever you are from in Australia there is likely to be a local spotter website or two with photos of aeroplanes from your own local airports? Agree with the above comments about not getting too caught up in the whole airliners.net thing. Use whatever camera you have at hand be it a classy Canon or Nikon DSLR or a more straightforward to use x 3 zoom compact, take a few shots and get 'em uploaded onto your local spotters website. Far more fun than some of the ol' palaver you come across on a.net etc and remember it is not all 777s, A380s & 747s so take your time to get some nice shots in of Cessna 172s, Navajos, ATRs, Dash 8s etc.
