Radar at Manchester
Hi folks, quick question relating to the "marine-esque" radar which sits on top of the control tower at Manchester (EGCC) - what is it's purpose? I was under the impression that the larger radar which is close to the AVP was the main radar - or is one a primary and the other a secondary? Perhaps even a weather radar?
Many thanks!!

I think you find that this is the ground movements radar which keep an eye on aircraft and vehicle movements on the ground in restricted areas.
I am sure that when someone from the relevant of ATC or ground movement/ops
reads this they will be able to give a much better report

The correct term is "Surface Movement Radar", and yes, its function is to heep an eye on moving objects, both a/c and vehicles. The Radar head near the AVP [The Watchman] is a longer range Radar used by approach to vector a/c onto finals.
Hope this helps
