Hand flying rewards?

I have been reading with interest the discussion of the merits of hand flying practice on Tech Log.

I've always imagined that there is a special pleasure in hand flying, derived from feeling the aircraft respond and from being 'in the loop'. Is this so? Also, is hand flying much more demanding than monitoring, thus giving greater job satisfaction?
