in response to the above question, not sure why, but another interesting point. i dropped some friends off at manchester thursday morning at around 6am in the morning. even at that time, the airport was running on a single runway operation. could this be connected, or is it usual for manchester to be operating single runway operation at that time? (i thought they usually went to single runway operation late morning - early afternoon!).

No idea why the runway was closed earlier, but to answer the second question:

MAN is single runway from 2100L to 0630L (usually, or thereabouts). Will be 23R/05L unless overnight maintenance is taking place. Landing 23L/departing 05R leads to a long taxy!

Also single runway from around 1200-1500L, for noise abatement purposes.

katanapilot,

thanks for that mate. was not sure if it was connected in any way or not, but from your reply seems that this was standard procedure.
