What to visit in eastern Germany
Heading out to Berlin and surrounding area soon. Aside from the normal touristy stuff, I am also interested in Aviation museums, manufactureres(big and small), WWI and WWII sites. Any good recommendations are appreciated.
Assuming that you are driving, there are a few aviation museums that I can recommend.
There is the German Air Force museum at Gatow, the former RAF Gatow; it is to the west of Berlin city centre, but still within what was known as 'West Berlin'. They seem to have 'one of everything' (aircraft-wise) from the (West) German Air Force and also the (East) German Air Force.
The Deutsches Technikmuseum is in Kreuzberg, a suburb of Berlin; lots of WW1 and WW2 types, and the most modern type is a C-47!
How about Tempelhof airport, just for the magnificent terminal building.
About 30 mins northeast of Berlin is the town of Finnow. There is a good aircraft museum at the western end of the airfield; it's less than 5 minutes from the autobahn.
About 1 hour southeast of Berlin is the airfield of Cottbus, and there is a similar aircraft museum here.
Let me know if you want more details.
