http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/7313093.stm
British Airways' first female pilot has been selected to fly the first plane to land at Heathrow's new Terminal 5.
Capt Lynn Barton, 51, became BA's first woman pilot in 1987. She will be the flight commander on BA026 from Hong Kong, landing at 0450 GMT on Thursday. "I was incredibly proud to have been British Airways' first ever woman pilot and now I have another first to my name," Capt Barton said.

I wonder what the selection process was to be the first onto T5?

Is this the resolution to the LHR runway capacity problems?
The aircraft land directly at T5 and don't land on the runways?
Fantastic, NO 3rd runway and the Green Lobby are happy!

I seem to recall a then First Officer Barton featuring in the excellent BBC TV series 'Airline', sometime around 1989. One programme showed the progress of a BA 742 from LHR to SYD, and she was the relief pilot. The skipper was a Ted Deacon. A later programme focussed on the delivery of BA's first -400 series 747. Ah, the memories....

It does amaze me that untill 21 years ago there were no female pilots in BA. With all respect and maybe even admiration to the lady who broke this tradition, is this really a fact to be proud of? If we were talking early 1970's I would understand, but 1987? How did it take so long?
