Very Odd ....

Not last Friday but for the previous 2 Fridays their has been a large Turboprop flying in circles around Sheffield ( looks like a twin ). It starts around 8pm and seems to go on for around 2-3 hours.

It's flightpath takes it almost directly over our house. I would estimate its height at between 8-12k feet.

The first Friday I saw it was the weekend of the Perseid Meteor show and that was the only reason I could think for it just flying in circles.

Any ideas ?

Good thinking but def was not an islander. Far too big. I would say its size was more in line with a medium sized Turboprop, say a G222 or ATR.

It did not deviate from its circle which was very precise but tight enough for me to see its right wing down in the turn.

It was high enough for me to not be able to identify the type visually. Should have had the knocks on it ....

Hi Nick
What about the possibility of it been at a height of about 2000ft and been one of the small (5-7ft wing span) remote drone a/c that Liverpool police use. They are fitted with camera of different types and used when a helicopter would give the game away to the scallies

Just a thought??

IF there is an aeroplane in that vicinity, then MACC [Manchester Area Control Centre] know nowt about it....

Nick.. I don't know about the one you've seen but there are various flights which are not supposed to be discussed, not on the R/T or telephone. During my time at Heathrow I religiously obeyed the rules on such matters, only to discover recently that such things are openly discussed on spotters' forums! Regsitrations, types, bases, where they are operating, callsigns, frequencies... they're all there!

Please hurry up and do the dutiful, because by the time I got to the 8th tee last week, even I was getting a tad irritated and I love all things aviation

:-) Thanks guys. I know what you mean about it getting on your nerves. I also have a love of anything aviation related but 2 hrs of turbo prop overhead on a quiet summers evening is a bit annoying !

We'll leave it their then.
