Winglets

Hello,

I'm wondering what the purpose of winglets are (the little upturned tips on the end of the wings, in case that's not the right term)

If it's down to fuel efficiency, how come recently released models like the 777 don't have them? (none of the ones I've seen have anyway).

Thanks

in the meantime, they're supposed to clean the a/c up by reducing wing tip vortices. Hopefully they gain more performance than they lose by extra weight and drag.

Personally, I thinnk they're and usually ruin clean lines. Secretely, I think they're sold to the airlines as another place to stick their logo

What's the big deal about winglets?

Now that winglets are everywhere, why do some spotting listers continue to report their presence (and by default, or not)?
