Does anybody know where a novice like me can get a list or something explaining some of the abbreviations and terminology on the site , some is easy enough but kind of stuck with others ,

Try 'Glossaries' as a a start. Beware some of the links are dead. Otherwise there is always the multitude of search engines, including our own.
