I would suggest they are the Red Bull fleet of B-25 Mitchell and DC-6? Just a guess because I know they have both, but what they are doing in the UK,I don't know.

I'll do some detective work!

marauder and DC4 over swindon today

I am pretty sure the lead ac was a marauder (I think matchbox did a kit of this along time ago) it was in company with a 4 prop airline style ac. My reccy is quite poor its been a long time since I was a space cadets. Could it have been a britania? I remember seeing a couple of constelations rotting at the side of the pan in Sao Tome and princepe they had canadian markings any proper spotters out their know their background. Hope I haven,t Heathrow director excited unnecesarily.

There aren't any Britannias flying, and anyway,it was a quiet turboprop, and,I think there is only one Marauder flying,in the US.

I couldn't find any events for these in UK (B-25/DC-6),and the next attendance for those two is Berlin Tempelhof on the 27th May for the Red Bull Air Race (from their website)(no,I don't think THESE are racing, just the usual Extras and Edges.) The DC-6 is shown as 'Training' from 16th to the 30th May,however.

Are you watching these races on Channel 4 ,by the way? Well worth it---Mike Mangold pulling 11.4 g from level to vertical in Barcelona.

<<it was a quiet turboprop>>

So it definitely wasn't a DC4, or DC6. I can relax again...

No HD,I'm saying the BRITANNIA was a quiet turboprop, whereas JW said what HE saw was noisy! So you're still in with a chance, mate!

It will have been Air Atlantique Classic Flight's Percival Pembroke and DC6 on the way to Dunsfold. The DC6 is staying there to be part of a film and the Pemrbroke was picking up the crew.

marauder and dc4 over swindon today

does the b24 have an H tail because the lead ac today didn,t. When I first heard them I thought from the noise that it was the BBMF going into Lyneham it was an incredible roar i,m sure they were both piston eng ac

The B-25 is an H tail, but I'll go with Stand 22's account. Quite a difference between Marauder/Pembroke though, but you did say you were rusty,JW!

well that solved that mystery sorry if i got anybody excited with my miss ident. Can any body help with my other question why did 2 constelations end up rottying at the side of the pan in Sao Tome and Principe excuse spelling these are two little islands former portugese colonies I think of the west coast of Africa. They were both intact and just looked like they,d been parked up and left to rot and I,am sure they had Canadian flags on their tales. Just to make sure i,m not going to embarass myself again the constelation is the one with 3 tail fins isnt it?

I think these aircraft are leftover from the Biafra Airlift.

Well thats another mystery solved then. I wonder if somebody cleverer than me nows how to use google global earth thing to get a pic of the airfield at Sao tome. Or if there are any portugese guys out there that have been down that way recently its been about 10 yrs since I was there. I do remember there being Portugese Air Force Casa there and they said they had ongoing detachment there all the time. I think there was also an AN2 a DC3 and an F27 all slowly falling apart. Thanks to those that have responded to my curiosity. Cheers Jo!

Google Earth/Sao Tome

I just typed "Sao Tome" into Google Earth and got a fuzzy low res image of the airport.

The resolution isn't good enough to see planes or any detail of the airport. You can see that there is one runway and a terminal and that's pretty much it.

You can probably find pictures in airliners.net...

The Super Constellations abandoned at Sao Tome are indeed ex-Biafra airlift, from 1968 or so, and thus will have been abandoned there for 35 years or more. They are CF-NAL and NAM, last operated by Canairelief.

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1013145/M/

Similarly there were Biafra airlift Super Connies abandoned at Faro in Portugal http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0041159/M/ and Malta http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0867869/M/ , both got converted into theme bars. The Faro one disappeared a few years ago, and I haven't been to Malta recently but I believe that has now been broken up as well.

Biafra (part of Nigeria) got into a civil war around 1968 and there were several operations from (principally) Sao Tome, which in those days was a Portugese colony off the coast. Some were humanitarian aid missions with supplies, others were gun runners. The latter had better aircraft and better-paid crews. Their mastermind of the gun running was a US character called Hank Wharton, if you search for him on the web you will find more detail. Redundant Connies were the cheapest large aircraft on the market at the time, but there were others used, DC-6s, C-97s, etc.

(Edited for the photos)

Saw the Air Atlantique DC6 in the region of Ockham (nr. Guildford Surrey) this week in a high speed flight at about 3000' heading NE. Is it still filming, and what? Looked great! Felt distinctly jealous- I'd rather have been up there than 30mph on the M25!

Rainboe,

On Friday G-APSA DC-6 left Dunsfold early afternoon(?) inbound to Biggin Hill to practice it's display with the rest of the fleet. It returned later that afternoon to Dunsfold. Around midday a Virgin A330-300 flew into Dunsfold to take part in the same film overnight. Should have departed on Saturday. See the thread below and watch the Video !!.
