There has also been a Tu154 operated by the Rossiya State Transport Company (mostly used by high ranking Russian officials) into Heathrow this week

Russians with Putin and I think there is also a Tu154 from the Czech Republic.
Something to do with some EU meeting in London?

1x IL62 Just landed at LHR, what a noise....!! Followed a few minutes later by a go round of what looked and sounded like a SyrianArab B747SP. 1900z

Another IL62 just landed, slamming into reverse thrust raised a few eyebrows, again just now.. fast taxi off of 27L

I just updated this again at 1951Z due to the 2nd aircraft landing

Looks like Putin's Il-96 has well and truly bitten the dust, for now anyway, a summit is surely the time for a "mine's bigger than yours" display on the Heathrow VIP parking area.

For those who don't know, it had a brake failure on landing at Helsinki last month, actually with El Pres on board. Fortunately they didn't overrun, though that presumably would have caused some reverse thrust ! Pres went home on the backup Il-62 and following some doubtless typically Russian "full and frank exchanges of opinion" the entire Il-96 production has been grounded since.

BTW speaking of a "mine's bigger than yours" contest, apparently the following took place at Washington DC in the 1990s, in front of a RAF VC-10 and an Air Force One 747.

John Major : "Wow, Mr President, I admire your plane"
Bill Clinton : "Thank you, Prime Minister".
Another British Minister : "Prime Minister, I must introduce you to Richard Branson. He's got eight of them !"

Some information in R&N at the time.

Ironically, Moscow Times is reporting that yesterday the Federal Transportation Inspection Service signed off the IL-96 to resumne flying. Fair amount of argument about the situation, with the some IL-96 pilots and at least one of the airlines saying the grounding was unnecessary.

As an aside, the latest Moscow Times article describes the Il-96 as:

The poor man's version of the Boeing 767 ... the last big achievement of Soviet civil aviation.
And I thought the British press were good at putting the boot in any indigenous product!

I can see two IL-76s out my office window now, but I am in Afghanistan at the moment... They are a bit more common out here.

Reminds me of the days I was an air cadet. Back in the late nineties was at RAF Fairford for the RIAT (1997 i think it was). Managed to get about the IL76 and speak to the crew!
