When it flew into Heathrow 2 years ago it was sequenced (with a bit of a gap ahead and behind and on the other parallel runway) in on the ILS with the other traffic.
Didn't have to hold either

was nr 2 to AF1 into TXL, when they switched off the ILS w/o warning! That was the fastest NDB-approach brief I've ever given!
anyway: Never seen a 74 spiral, though
must have been cool for Dubya

It's usually a bit more of a "gap" ahead and behind as US security takes over half the airfield and carrrries out it's own runway inspection before AF1 lands! A colleague of mine had the dubious privilege of sending AF1 round when the inspection team had not reported clear of the runway!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
While we are on the subject of Air Force One at LHR...
Some lucky person managed to catch a well-known PPruner expertly directing Dubya into LHR when he last visited:
In all it's glory: MP3 or WAV format
Poor pilot sounds a bit out of his depth... probably used to having "the skies cleared" for him

sorry
Not really, he asks a few questions that most pilots would probably ask at a busy international airport that they were not familiar with!
Hey............that's me!!!!
The news said AF1 was 'on final approach' so I quickly hooked up the micro tape recorder hit record and hoped for the best, thats why it's not as good as the Concorde recording - didn't get as much time to play with the levels and the squelch.

Technically, that would be a helical approach, perhaps with a spiral modification.
Helix: a uniform path around the surface of a cylinder traced at an angle to the longditudinal axis of the cylinder
Spiral: a circular shape with an ever decreasing radius of curvature described in a two dimensional plane

It's doing a spiral approach
