Notar

I remember many years ago thinking what a brilliant idea NOTAR helicopters were when they first appeared.

Despite living close to an airport, I have never seen one though.

Are they simply not popular, too expensive, or ???

Well,it did appear on McDonnell Douglas helis, and of course they are no more. I think the division was sold off,and they were producing limited aircraft, mostly for Police work, but they weren't NOTAR ones.
Really don't know why the take-up was low.

MD Helicopters made the 520N, 600 and the 900 series with NOTAR. They are around, but there were not alot of them made.
I did a quick check of serial numbers and found 108 for 900's and 68 for 600's to be the highest serial numbers in the States.

Question:

When the engine stops in a NOTAR, how do you control yaw in autorotation?

I fires me cannons, out of the port side and the recoil keeps the back end where it aught to be.
Quite hectic though, pouring gunpowder loading iron balls and flying all at the same time. Not a task for the faint and feeble.

i`m sure the Police Helo in Leeds is NOTAR and i`m sure the one that flew over in Manchester at the REM concert was NOTAR too.

Saw one at Shoreham last year when i went to Transair too, so theres a few about.

Just like the TR is driven by the transmission in autorotation, the NOTAR fan is driven by a shaft out the back of the main transmission.
