hi. i wonder if anyone can tell me what the lights inside a helicopter are for. they are either red or orange and even from the ground they seem quite big. Do they assist with navigation? thanks again. :Joined: Oct 2000

Just read your profile and I think I ought to pop up and explain everything on a one-to-one basis!!
Seriously, I hope a pilot will respond. I do not know the answer except that navigation probably doesn't come into the equation as I know of no navigation system employing lights of that nature in an aeroplane. I wonder how many helicopters you've seen with the lights? As the lights are big it suggests they are something to do with outside, rather than inside, the helicopter.

I d say it depends on how high they are..
Could be glow from instrument lights, map reading lights or monitors.
Or as HD says reflections from outside onto the canopy.
PW
..or the crew might have been eating Ready Brek!
