Weird helicopter over Manchester

When we was in the car the other day on the way to Leeds we saw a white coloured helicopter flying low down over the m60 - it had a huge blue coloured box underneath it - not hanging, but attached to the helicopter.
I would love to know what this is - my dad thinks it is to measure speeds of cars, a lot of cars were slowing down thinking it was the police, but I know there helicopter is black.

Sorry M8 couldn't resist it. The Magellan Factor is what is used to take the wind out of an argument that someone else is winning. Always ask them if they have taken it into account.

I haven't a clue what your helo had underneath, and would be interested as your good self to find out. PM my if you ever find out

The helicopter that you saw was a AS355F1 twin squirrel, complete with motorway surveying equipment.

Hello, Just for your information the helicopter you saw was operating from Manchester Barton for a few days.. going back for maintenance and returned back again a week later.

The squirrel in question G-BXBT was once used as a relief police aircraft and was lovingly known as "Box o bits".
