Pilot career development
Might we discuss what various airlines do to assist pilots with their personal and career development? It's my understanding (UK) that employers have certain duties to offer their employees opportunities to 'better themselves' in various ways, but that this seldom occurs...
If you're a legal expert, perhaps you could post some thoughts about what the minimum standard of such assistance might be (and some relevant references).
If you're a pilot or cabin crew member, please tell us what YOU receive or understand you're entitled to, and what benefit you extract from it.
Perhaps your employer sees the legally required recurrent training as the extent of their responsibility - if so, do you feel this is enough?

Well the trouble is that the bean counters worry about "training" their staff and then having them leave to go to another company.
What they should really worry about is NOT training them and keeping them!
I feel that pilot "personal and career development" is something of an oxymoron where most companies are concerned.
If they could get away without any recurrent training they would do so!

From personal experience.. command upgrade course was : appear at the sim and announce to a suprised trainer that I was on a command course...
Signed off : I had f/o's with legal minimum hours on type who when pressed on any technical subject, shrugged and said that the company had not give them a aircraft manual for self study on grounds of cost
