Flying music?
I'm just putting together a CD for the car featuring music on the subject of flying. Any suggestions to go with these....?
Frank Sinatra - Fly me to the moon Frank Sinatra - Come fly with me Tom Petty - Learning to fly Foo Fighters - Learn to fly R. Kelly - I believe I can fly Oasis - Supersonic Oasis - Up in the sky Grace - If I could fly Lenny Kravitz - Fly away |
Cast....You've got to fly
Joan Armatrading...Drop the pilot. Wings...Jet (If you must) Janet Jackson...Runway (It's actually Runaway but who cares) I'll keep thinking..... ------------------ Backtrack if required |
Poco - Flying Solo (not that anyone's ever heard of Poco)
"Up where we belong" by whoever, if you really must. I'm Mandy, fly me - 10cc On top of the world - Carpenters Snoopy versus the Red Baron - can't remember who Danger zone - Kenny Loggins When I was young I was no fool - The 618 Ensemble BackSeat |
Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky
Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight (This was used to great effect as one of the backing tracks for the compilation video put together by the in-theatre journos in Bahrain during the Gulf War.) Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell |
On the subject of 'In the air tonight'
The journos if British may have been making a double ironical point. This single amongst a list of others was banned from BBC radio playlists for the duration of the Gulf conflict due to its potentially disturbing subtext. As for new songs for a compilation; 'Freebird' by Lynard Skynard. 'The Wind Beneath My Wings' ;) choose your version. |
Seal-Crazy
('..In a world full of people, only some born to fly...') |
Pink Floyd - Learning To Fly. Dave Gilmour's pretty authoritative on the subject I believe.
|
How about David Bowie's Space Oddity? Most of the lyrics fit flying just as well as space travel.
|
Hagbard,
The video mentioned above was produced by the journos covering the conflict from Bahrain. They were living in very close proximity to those of us (Tornado /Jaguar / Bucaneer / Victor crews) based there at the time. Whilst the lyrics might not have been appropriate in a PC world, they were quite apt at the time! Moreover, the footage of Tornados taking off in full reheat at night, bomb releases and detonations, was awesome set to the right music! |
The best one I heard was the Theme From Rawhide during boarding. Excellent.
|
"Rawhide" during pax loading... http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/tongue.gif
Ride of the Valkyrie during T/O :) |
ACDCs "Highway to Hell" played over the 737 PA during TO/climb. Lyrics certainley fit in well with me! http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/tongue.gif
|
ACDC must be smokin' some good **** when they sing "I feel safe in New York City". Maybe they have TCAS in their guitars, or they just "shoot-shoot-shoot from the hip, because they have a stiff-stiff-stiff upper lip".-CY
------------------ *deep inhale* I LOVE the smell of jet-a in the morning.. |
I've got a small collection of songs which feature recordings of ATC conversations (may I collect my Ms Grabber Special Prize For Sadness now, please?).
These are: Learning To Fly, Pink Floyd (op. cit.) The Wreck Of The Fairchild, Thomas Dolby (fake Spanish ATC.) My Centurion, Gary Numan (not something to play over the PA to the pax, as it's all about engine failure in a Cessna! For your delight and delectation, here's an excerpt from the lyrics: This machine/No sign of life/Only the whisper of air She won't turn/She won't climb/She won't stop/She won't fly I'm falling/I'm silent/I'm thinking/I'm waiting for this thing to end. All I can do now is wait for the noise.) Cheering, eh? He walked away from that one, by the way. And, er, that's it. Any more? |
99 luffballoons :)

Noddy,
I can imagine the footage to music (lyrics especially) really hit the spot. I'm an ex-camera op myself and heard a couple of accounts from some ENG crew who were out there. Never got to see the videos though, shame. |
One that reminds me of the Dash 8s of a UK regional (one of the two that have them!) when cleared for take off - Van Morrison's "Dweller on the Threshold". http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/tongue.gif
|
....and here's some more!!!!!
Tom Petty.............Free Fallin' Jimi Hendrix..........Little Wing Tori Amos.............Not The Red Baron .....and for 146 drivers...we have.. Jimi Hendrix..........Purple Haze The platters..........Smoke Gets In your Eyes :) :) |
Harry Chapin - Taxi. Great blues.
I can't remember the artists name, but the song was "caught between the moon and New York City" written while the writer was in a holding pattern over NYC. Tom Petty - Learning to Fly - way cool. |
Mike Oldfield: Five Miles Out, includes ATC and technical jargon
Late John Denver: Leaving on a Jetplane, as a pilot/musician also has an "airy" feel to many of his songs. |
