Flying music?

I'm just putting together a CD for the car featuring music on the subject of flying. Any suggestions to go with these....?

Tom Petty - Learning to fly
Foo Fighters - Learn to fly
R. Kelly - I believe I can fly
Oasis - Supersonic
Oasis - Up in the sky
Grace - If I could fly
Lenny Kravitz - Fly away

Toebrake 28th April 2000 15:52

Cast....You've got to fly

Joan Armatrading...Drop the pilot.

Wings...Jet (If you must)

Janet Jackson...Runway (It's actually Runaway but who cares)

I'll keep thinking.....

Noddy Staltern 28th April 2000 17:12

Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky

Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight

(This was used to great effect as one of the backing tracks for the compilation video put together by the in-theatre journos in Bahrain during the Gulf War.)

Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell

Hagbard the Amateur 28th April 2000 17:30

On the subject of 'In the air tonight'
The journos if British may have been making a double ironical point. This single amongst a list of others was banned from BBC radio playlists for the duration of the Gulf conflict due to its potentially disturbing subtext.

As for new songs for a compilation;
'Freebird' by Lynard Skynard.
'The Wind Beneath My Wings' ;) choose your version.

Alfie_Midnight 28th April 2000 20:36

Seal-Crazy
('..In a world full of people, only some born to fly...')

DB6 28th April 2000 22:12

Pink Floyd - Learning To Fly. Dave Gilmour's pretty authoritative on the subject I believe.

Dr Jekyll 28th April 2000 22:47

How about David Bowie's Space Oddity? Most of the lyrics fit flying just as well as space travel.

Noddy Staltern 29th April 2000 00:20

Hagbard,
The video mentioned above was produced by the journos covering the conflict from Bahrain. They were living in very close proximity to those of us (Tornado /Jaguar / Bucaneer / Victor crews) based there at the time. Whilst the lyrics might not have been appropriate in a PC world, they were quite apt at the time! Moreover, the footage of Tornados taking off in full reheat at night, bomb releases and detonations, was awesome set to the right music!

CaptainSquelch 29th April 2000 00:33

The best one I heard was the Theme From Rawhide during boarding. Excellent.

Bendo 29th April 2000 04:22

"Rawhide" during pax loading... http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/tongue.gif

Ride of the Valkyrie during T/O :)

Slasher 29th April 2000 06:21

ACDCs "Highway to Hell" played over the 737 PA during TO/climb. Lyrics certainley fit in well with me! http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/tongue.gif

Corporate Yank 29th April 2000 06:29

ACDC must be smokin' some good **** when they sing "I feel safe in New York City". Maybe they have TCAS in their guitars, or they just "shoot-shoot-shoot from the hip, because they have a stiff-stiff-stiff upper lip".-CY

I've got a small collection of songs which feature recordings of ATC conversations (may I collect my Ms Grabber Special Prize For Sadness now, please?).

These are:

Learning To Fly, Pink Floyd (op. cit.)

The Wreck Of The Fairchild, Thomas Dolby (fake Spanish ATC.)

My Centurion, Gary Numan (not something to play over the PA to the pax, as it's all about engine failure in a Cessna! For your delight and delectation, here's an excerpt from the lyrics:

This machine/No sign of life/Only the whisper of air

She won't turn/She won't climb/She won't stop/She won't fly

I'm falling/I'm silent/I'm thinking/I'm waiting for this thing to end.

All I can do now is wait for the noise.)

Cheering, eh? He walked away from that one, by the way.

And, er, that's it. Any more?

shadowdazzer 29th April 2000 17:19

99 luffballoons :)

Hagbard the Amateur 29th April 2000 18:33

Noddy,

I can imagine the footage to music (lyrics especially) really hit the spot. I'm an ex-camera op myself and heard a couple of accounts from some ENG crew who were out there. Never got to see the videos though, shame.

One that reminds me of the Dash 8s of a UK regional (one of the two that have them!) when cleared for take off - Van Morrison's "Dweller on the Threshold". http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/tongue.gif

Harry Chapin - Taxi. Great blues.

I can't remember the artists name, but the song was "caught between the moon and New York City" written while the writer was in a holding pattern over NYC.

Tom Petty - Learning to Fly - way cool.

Citiusaltius 2nd May 2000 14:48

Mike Oldfield: Five Miles Out, includes ATC and technical jargon
Late John Denver: Leaving on a Jetplane, as a pilot/musician also has an "airy" feel to many of his songs.

CaptainSquelch 3rd May 2000 02:45

"Another one bites the dust" from Queen while in line for T/O.

Petergozinya 3rd May 2000 05:57

All right!

A few years back my roommate found this album. It had a strapping young "captain" with his jacket strung over his shoulder standing in front of a concorde. BA, or Air France, I don't recall. The album title was something to the effect of, "Everyone loves the captain, except the crew". One of the tracks had a rather cool lyric, to the effect of, "If he hasn't got the time to light the seat belt sign...he hasn't got the time to light the seat belt sign, (blah, blah) Hurtleing across the Atlantic..while balancing the book on his knees.. I could leave all my clothes on some far away beach, just the question would be picking the day...Better never than late. I'm sure some one would know the artist. This rather spotty recollection comes from many years ago. Does anyone remember this? http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/confused.gif

overpaidgovtemployee 3rd May 2000 06:03

"Eagle" by Abba. Helps to remind me sometimes why the hell I got into this business to begin with.

Noddy Staltern 3rd May 2000 21:31

jetjackel,

I believe the song you were referring to ('between the moon and NYC') was by Christopher Cross. Had never heard where the lyrics had come from, but it makes sense!

Another track used to excellent effect in a flying video is 'Headlong' by Queen - used in the 'Phantom Phinale' video produced by a couple of guys at Wattisham as the F4 finished RAF service....fantastic shots of low-level flying over the Falklands!

Ramjet 4th May 2000 06:08

A few of my favourites:

Jet Airliner - Steve Miller Band
Back in the USSR - Beatles
Promised Land - Dave Edmunds
Teach Me How To Fly - ? (Oz group though)

Just realised - these are all over a quarter of a century old, from the good-ol-days just within the haze of living memory :)- no wonder it's getting harder to drag myself out of bed these mornings !! :)

Slasher 7th May 2000 07:45

Just discovered the theme to that latest Lost In Space movie. Fits in when running along the stratocu cloud tops at barber pole!
