ISS Canadarm Damaged by Space Junk

Given the quantity of debris in orbit, I am surprised that this sort of occurrence does not happen more frequently.

"Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space."
... which is a good thing in this case!

The problem is that near Earth orbit is not so big. A couple of decent sized satellites colliding in NEO could be devastating to the rest, not to mention the ISS and those astronauts/cosmonauts within. :=

The number of space debris is huge, and it increases every year, so I think we'll soon start to see such news every month.
