Unlucky Ex-Irish Aviation Authority Top Man
An article from RTE (the Irish news agency) that should add fuel to the Liberia analogy vis-a-vis the Irish Aviation Authority!
I know this is a cruel report on one man's failings but a free press is a free press...

The sentence on a former Director of the Irish Aviation Authority for a drugs offence has been increased from 2.5 to four years.
However, the Court of Criminal Appeal suspended the final six months of the new sentence imposed today on Thomas O'Shaughnessy from Finian Park, Shannon. The former member of Shannon Town Commissioners will now serve 3.5 years in prison.
He was jailed last November after pleading guilty to possession of 477 grams of cocaine, valued at €50,000.
The Director of Public Prosecutions had appealed the sentenced imposed by the Circuit Criminal Court on the grounds of undue leniency.
The DPP had argued that the trial judge had failed to show regard to the seriousness with which the Oireachtas views this type of offence, and that 2.5 years was substantially out of the normal run of sentence imposed in these cases.
O'Shaughnessy faced a possible minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years as the value of the drugs had exceeded €12,700.
The Court of Criminal Appeal said that the major factor influencing the trial judge was the effort made by O'Shaughnessy to cope with his addiction and rehabilitate himself, which a benefit to the individual and to the public.
But while they concluded the sentence was unduly lenient, they indicated they would not substitute a hugely increased sentence but rather four years with the final six months suspended.
He must not have paid his political party dues...
