orange marker plates in fields

It seems wherever you go in the countryside you see these orange marker plates shaped like a house roof on posts in fields, i was told by someone they are something to do with aviation. Can anyone enlighten me as to what they are for please.

VS-075 - I`m pretty sure that they mark the routes of oil pipelines and are used by helicopters engaged in checking such pipelines for leakages or other damage.

Theydo! What the rotaries are really doing is checking that mobody is digging holes or building on the line of the pipe -I don't beleive that they can detect leaks.

And I've always wondered why those helicopters keep flying across the same fields!

Yes they are markers for the gas lines and I,m told on good authority that choppers doing the inspection can detect leaks from the line by discolouration of the ground ,sounds plausible.
