Probably a short lived gimic. Much like SMS itself. (IMHO)
There are however several companies who are developing mobile 'phone "cells" which can theoretically be installed in an aircraft and act as a repeater. This enables the transmitter within the handset to operate at a very low power and thus cause minimum disturbance to avionics.
There are inherent problems with this, primarily caused by the handset/cell protocol but that will take me off topic!
Assuming these problems could be circumvented and a manufacturer managed to get a system certified then it would be possible to send text messages and make/receive 'phone calls on a 'plane.
Soon there won't be any place left on the earth where you do not keep hearing those annoying ringing tones and have people shouting into handsets.
WHAT? Sorry, Can't hear you... Yes, yes, we're just landing... HELLO?
