Heathrow Racetrack

One of the world's busiest airports was turned into a temporary race track last night. More than a hundred charity fund-raisers ran the full length of Heathrow's northern runway, and round the taxiways too. The airport normally handles more than one thousand flights a day - but there was no need to dodge any incoming Jumbo Jets. The run - in aid of the Anthony Nolan Trust leukaemia charity - took place after the airport had closed for the night.

Heathrow doesn't "close for the night", but very many congratulations to the intrepid fund raisers. There have been a number of similar events over the years. One air traffic controller rode his Pennyfarthing bike round Heathrow's perimeter to raise money and many, many thousands of pounds have been raised by ATC staff for the Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Keep up the good work, which will be greatly appreciated by many people..

We know that Heathrow is officially an H24 airport, but the fact that there's nothing been scheduled for years between about 23.30 and 04.30, and it's unusual for there to be an actual movement in these times, means that in the eyes of the general public it does indeed close overnight.

Oh, and well done to the charity raisers.
