How many pilots worldwide/uk
Just out of curiosity and perhaps a touch of boredom I wondered if anybody either has any info or knows where i can find it on pilot numbers and stats.. ie: How many PPL's/CPL's/ATPL's there are in the uk or internationally?

In 2003, according to official statistics, there were about 30,000 people who held a licence enabling them to fly fixed wing aircraft. Every year, 2500 more people qualify as pilots, but the overall total of 30,000 doesn’t change that much. Why? One reason is that older pilots may fail their medical. Other people may simply give up. So this figure of 30,000 remains relatively constant.
Of these, about a third will also hold an ATPL (Airline Transport Pilots Licence), and this is out of a total UK population of sixty million.
The amount of female pilots is shockingly tiny. According to figures published by the CAA in March 2000, only 6% of PPL pilots are actually women, and for airline pilots, this figure reduces even further – with only 2%. Aviation, it would appear, is a male-dominated pastime. But we all knew that anyway.

Good work flock... Thats more than i thought it would be but still not that many in the whole scheme of things.
Dont suppose you have any idea idea on the worldwide figures? I read something a while ago about 400,000 in the USA but that sounds a little high to me.

The figure of 400000 for the US doesn't sound that bad, it has a population of 300,000,000 (so just over 0.1%), andaircraft and flying are much more affordable over here. A chap I work with owns 3 aircraft out right (Pitts, bonanza and mooney) and has another three that he has a mortgage on, he is just a guy who gets on with his work not in any position of responsibility. I could only imagine the well off in the UK being able to do that.
Just had a quick look on the web, apparently in the 70's there were around 700,000 pilots in the US (4.3% being women) nowadays there are 6% female pilots but it didn't give a figure that the 6% was from.
