I'm guessing some sub-editor decided that "passengers were blissfully unaware" wasn't going to sell many newspapers ...

As you've all probably worked out, I'm not a pilot (but have flown microlights); surely the IAF pilot would have been able to tell whether he was continuing to climb even if his altimeter wasn't working?

I suppose the vertical speed machine wasn't working either. What a truly stupid story.
