Bright lights west of Naha Jan 6th 1100Z
Witnessed the strangest thing while flying southbound just west of Naha last night. Two super bright lights above the 8000' overcast layer visible from 100nm. They were of yellow/orange color (fire like light), remaining on for 5 min then turning off all of a sudden. Reappeared few minutes later to turn off once we are about to overfly them. The strangest thing is that they where not moving and where so bright that they were making the upper surface of the overcast layer visible as if it was daytime. Also, just before disappearing the last time, I noticed some kind of a light tail made by several less bright lights. Each lights had its identical S shaped tail.
Heard a Xanadu noticing them also and querying ATC about it. They had no clue what we were talking about.
Can somebody provide an explanation so I can rule out the purser's UFO theory with substantial information?

hahahaha ..
And I don't think UFOs would necessarily need to have their lights on. They fly through space from distant planets without the need for lights, and all of a sudden, they come to earth and they feel the need to turn their lights on? What ever for?

Very often the P3s from Naha 'play' in that area and when they have their surface search lights on you can see them from the other side of the world. If they were involved in an exercise or some sort of training then there would be good reason for the lights to be switched on and off.
