Thumbs up Biggest order ever: IndiGo splurges $25.5 bn on 250 Airbus aircraft

Despite stiff competition, low-fare airline IndiGo is ramping up its fleet by placing the largest ever order by an Indian carrier to get 250 A320neo aircraft for a tota cost of $25.5 billion.

The airline said in a statement that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus to acquire 250 A320neo aircraft, which it said was the biggest order ever placed with the Airbus in terms of number of aircraft.

"The additional aircraft will enable us to continue to bring our low fares and courteous, hassle free service to more customers and markets and will create more job opportunities and growth," Aditya Ghosh, President of IndiGo was quoted as saying in the release.

The airline said that it had previously ordered 280 Airbus aircraft, of which 100 were of the A320ceo model and 180 were of the A320neo model.

The engine selection for this order is not expected to be made in the near future, the airline said in the statement.

Indigo has a fleet of 83 aircraft presently and connects 36 destinations through 540 daily flights.

The question is what fleet strength is Indigo looking at. Most of these ordered planes are to recycle the old ones out. They may still be only a 100-150 airplane carrier.

@LowPassGliderA330

Thats the same question everyone asked when they ordered 100 aircraft back in 2005

They were supposed to take delivery of all 100 aircraft in 10 years . Instead they will take delivery of the 100th Aircraft in 8 years . The last aircraft from the original 100 aircraft order will come in November this year
