Sounds like a name developed by some pimple-faced 25 year old McKinsey consultant. Not good.

Ten things we know about Vistara

Here is what we know about the Tata-SIA venture:

1. What’s in a name: The airline’s brands name, Vistara, was unveiled today and the company has started a new Twitter account. The name is inspired by ‘vistaar’, a sanskrit word meaning “limitless expanse”.

2. Logo: The airline also unveiled its new star-shaped logo on their Twitter account:

3. Shareholding: Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group, partnered with Singapore Airlines on September 19, 2013, to launch this airline with an initial investment of $100 million. Tata Sons holds 51% stake while the remainder is with Singapore Airlines.

4. Airbus over Boeing: Singapore Airlines chose Airbus’s A320 for this venture. Aircraft will be leased.

5. Full-service: Unlike Air Asia, which aims to revolutionise low-budget travel in India, TATA-SIA venture is going to be a full-service airline. After the collapse of Kingfisher, Jet Airways and Air India are the only players left in India’s full-service market.

6. “TATA- SIA is most likely starting a full-service airline which will mean it will be more focused on corporate traveler. Don’t see any impact on fares but introduction of new service levels,” Kapil Kaul, South Asia CEO at Centre for Aviation, told Quartz.

7 Hub: TATA SIA Airlines Limited will be based in New Delhi. All flights, including linked flights, will originate in Delhi and all aircraft will return to Delhi at night.

8. Route map: According to the documents submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Tata-SIA plans to operate 87 weekly flights during the first year of its operation. The airline is likely to have 14 flights a week connecting Delhi to Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. Apart from covering the big cities, there are going to be seven flights a week to Srinagar, Patna and Chandigarh.

9. Uniform: The cabin crew will not be dressed in saris or skirts, but in pants. Vistara says that their uniform, designed by Abraham & Thakore, is practical and embodies the best of Indian traditional wear.

10. Outsourcing strategy: The airline has tied up with Air India, which will manage its ground-handling and engineering services.
“There are many pros with outsourcing such as negotiating costs and soliciting bids from different players; not investing in infrastructure; not having to look for and hire specialised people; not getting involved in labour contracts, and so on,” Steve Forte, New York-based former chief executive of Jet Airways told Livemint.

11. Team: Tata veteran Prasad Menon is the chairman of TATA SIA Airlines Limited. He serves on the boards of several Tata companies, including Tata Industries, Tata Chemicals, Tata Projects and Tata Consulting Engineers.

Vistara

This name is already giving Jet Airways the jitters. Shri Goyal is considering dropping the LCC Jetlite & hybrid Jet Konnect business models. Going in for full service to compete with the new entity in the domestic market.

Whether this will work or not in a highly competitive market where airlines are bleeding except one, is to be seen.

For the customer, its a win win situation.

The name has already ensured that TATA SIA are on the back foot. They certainly could have come up with a much more appealing name. For some reason if their service and operational standards do not live up to the expectations of the travelling public , that would be the death knell for the project.

Jet will again rotate back to LCC if spicejet folds....! Jets service now leaves a lot to be desired as does its equipment. It is going to be primarily a feeder service to its new partner and that is it.

Quite sure Tata will roll out a decent product considering its bandwidth, however cannot figure out for the life of me why such a corny name.....

In the end if the market is ready for full service then they will do great, if not they will end up doing what jet did, going loco.....

The problem is the name was designed by some ad agency / PR firm whizz kid who has no idea about aviation and how it relates to the common man. You combine that with a management that is trying various new things to appeal to the traveller and you have a name like Vistara. This is much like SIA's present experiment in Scoot , a struggling name and a struggling airline. It's just like flying , you try out things like MPL , modern cockpit practises , excess CRM , new training techniques and what happens is you go on to condone mediocrity. The end result is you have crashes like the many we have had in the last one month , with more dead bodies , terrible personal loss , broken aircraft among the many things. Have a nice day people....
