Looks like he was tracking the edge stripe thinking it was the centerline stripe.

Did that myself, for the first time, earlier this year. Night, rainy, using turn button at the end of the runway. Realized it before it became embarrassing.

Yup, many years ago, looked up from briefcase to find captain doing just that on taxiway which, fortunately, had very wide hard shoulder.

Immediate note to self at the time: No matter how good and experienced the old man is, the FO should carefully monitor the operation.

I think the thread title is misleading. This is not a skidding incident. It's quite clear the pilot drove the thing onto the grass.

Ah yes, of course!

And there be no such thing as a precautionary landing, it's always full on Emergency and a terrifying ordeal for the SLF.

Saudi Airlines plane swerves off Manila runway

Manila: A Saudi Arabian Airlines plane swerved off the runway at Manila's international airport and became stuck in the mud as it prepared to take off Tuesday evening after a heavy rain, officials said.

None of the 298 passengers was hurt, but at least 11 other flights were delayed by the blocked runway.

The airport authority said workers were attempting to remove the Boeing 747 from the runway.

Flight SV871 bound for Riyadh was canceled and the passengers were taken away by bus and put up in a hotel. Officials could not immediately say when the runway would be cleared.

Dark

That taxiway and that particular turn into the runway is tight. Lighting is poor and can be made more difficult by the rain.

All operating into and out of Manila, know how tight and narrow the taxiways are. They are basically traps for all wide body a/c. Its time the Phillipines did something about them.
