Does anybody know if it is possible to live in Malaysia and commute from there in order to reduce expenses ??

Commuting from Malaysia is feasible from JB if you have around 8-9 flights a month. Everything is so much cheaper including housing however bear in mind the crossings into S'pore are very busy from around 5am and exiting from around 4pm and long queues are normal with long waiting times. You don't want to hit one after a long flight back from Oz only to be dozing off while standing still in traffic.
Parking might be an issue at Changi including bringing your car into S'pore multiple times from Malaysia. If I remember correctly Malaysian cars are allowed 10 free entries per year.
