Thumbs up IndiGo emerges as leader of aviation market

NEW DELHI: No frill airline IndiGo has emerged as the leader in aviation sector by cornering 27 per cent of the market share in July even as the month witnessed a dip in total number of air passengers.

Jet Airways and its subsidiary JetLite jointly, which cornered 27.4 per cent of the market share in June this year to be the leader, took the second spot with 26.6 per cent share while Air India witnessed an increase in its share in the month of July, according to the passenger traffic data released by the civil aviation ministry.

The national carrier, which recently faced a 58-day-long strike by its pilots, witnessed an increase in its market share from 16.8 per cent in June to 18.2 per cent last month

Another no frill carrier SpiceJet registered a market share of 17.8 per cent last month. Its share has dipped a bit from 18.6 per cent in June.

GoAir and Kingfisher Airlines had a market share of 7 per cent and 3.4 per cent, respectively.

The data submitted by various domestic airlines shows that the scheduled domestic airlines carried less number of passengers in July compared to the preceding month. This was due to July being a lean season for the aviation sector.

In July, a total of 45.37 lakh passengers flew with the domestic carriers compared to 51.08 lakh in the month of June.

However, between January and July, the number of passengers increased by 1.74 per cent as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

The domestic airlines carried 354.52 lakh passengers between January and July 2012 as against 348.47 lakh during the corresponding period of the previous year, the ministry data shows
