AirAsia Bhd Group CEO Tony Fernandes is expected to move to a newly set up regional centre in the Indonesian capital to oversee the airline's expansion plans in Southeast Asia.
"It would be a good assumption that I'm going there," Fernandes, one of Malaysia's most successful businessmen, told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday at the company headquarters in Sepang, near Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The official announcement of his move is expected on Monday along with other key appointments to the regional office and a new CEO for the airline's Malaysia operations to replace Fernandes.
The regional office will not mean a lesser role for the airline's headquarters, which will remain in Malaysia, Fernandes said. "Nothing changes for the Malaysian operations."
His remarks end weeks of speculation that the airline's headquarters would move from Sepang in the wake of a failed share swap deal between AirAsia (AIRA.KL) and national airline, Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MASM.KL).
The deal, aimed at helping both carriers compete against rivals, fell through due to opposition from MAS's labour union.
Fernandes said locating the regional office away from the airline's Malaysian operations will allow senior managers to work in a neutral environment free of the day-to-day pressures in the airline's headquarters.
The Jakarta office will allow the airline to tap the large Indonesian market and raise AirAsia Indonesia's profile before its listing on the Jakarta Stock Exchange by the end of the year.
It will also help the airline lobby the secretariat of the Association of South East Asian Nations, also based in the city, for greater integration in the region, he said.
"I'm just trying to make more money. There is no hidden agenda," Fernandes said.
Fernandes has overseen AirAsia's spectacular growth from two planes to Asia's largest budget carrier over the past decade.
AirAsia last year placed a then record order with Airbus (EAD.PA) advanced A320 planes worth $18 billion. Fernandes told Reuters last month AirAsia is studying a potential $4 billion deal to buy another 50 Airbus A320s.

AirAsia had signed a joint venture agreement with Japan's All Nippon Airways to form AirAsia Japan, which is expected have its first flight in August.
In line with the company's expansion strategy, he said, the airline was also considering placing an additional order for 50 planes to its existing order of 75 planes, scheduled to be delivered by 2016.

Things don't look too good in bolehland. Tf's godfather, the panakoteh ak has liquidated quite a bit of his assets and moved the dough elsewhere. Nusantara can be a great place to stash a lot of ill gotten stuff if you prefer not to be too sophiscated!
Tf is also the bagman for a lot of our corrupted tuans and their ilk; he fits nicely as a barua for a lot these people. The cow elephant and the cow bovine both have lots to stash away...the previous safe havens for money laundering are now in turmoil and quite susceptible to nosy, prickly sleuths who can cause quite bit of headache...so tf and Air Asia's SEAsian clones make great strategic vehicles to cart off their loot offshore. Elementary, my dear Watson!

The only way way airasia indonesia gonna increaase passenger load in this air bus services is to stop hidden costs when you buy a ticket, like..credit cards, check in charges, baggage, seating etc.. list goes on...by the time I finish adding the charges I can travel with Garuda..same price and you get fed.
Indonesia are not as stupid as the people across the strait.. there are many carriers to chose from and all do not charge you. So you dont feel that you have just been with a gold digger...

AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes has called the collapse of a tie-up with struggling flag carrier Malaysia Airlines a relief that will free him up to focus on his fast-growing budget carrier.
In his most extensive comments to date on the failed deal, Fernandes said in interviews published on Friday that “massive” Malaysia Airlines union resistance was to blame and implied that the carrier had deep problems to resolve.
“I was off blood pressure pills as soon as the swap was off. I’m serious,” he told The Edge business daily.
“Sometimes you need a bit of a kick up your backside. When we have built fantastic operations at AirAsia, we didn’t appreciate it until we [saw] something else,” he said.
His comments appear two days after AirAsia announced it is setting up a strategic planning center in Indonesia, away from its Malaysian headquarters, with Fernandes expected to lead expansion of regional operations from there.
AirAsia had agreed in August last year to buy 20.5 percent of Malaysia Airlines under a strategic tie-up aimed at turning around the national carrier.
But the share swap deal was pulled early last month after pressure from Malaysia Airlines’ powerful employees union, who feared job cuts and other cost-reducing moves.
Fernandes said Malaysia Airlines’ problems could have been fixed under the tie-up.
“Yes, there will be short-term pain but you have to make the business successful as you cannot be on life-support,” he told The Star newspaper.
“[But] you reach a point of why waste time talking? … I’m glad it’s over,” he added.
With Fernandes moving to Indonesia, the airline will announce on Monday a replacement to head its Malaysia operations.
Fernandes said he would “still be heavily involved in the day-to-day running of the airline” and was “not leaving anytime soon,” but was keen on a succession plan.
The former music executive took over the airline a decade ago and turned it from an ailing outfit with two planes into one of the region’s biggest success stories.
Last month, AirAsia posted a 4.0 percent increase in first-quarter net profit with the company citing a solid business model as the reason. It also posted a record quarter revenue of 1.17 billion ringgit ($370 million).
Malaysia Airlines, on the other hand, reported its fifth consecutive loss, amounting to 171.8 million ringgit for the quarter ended March 31.
