DGCA probe into safety lapses by Jet Airways crew

NEW DELHI: Days after aviation regulator ordered suspension of two Jet Airways pilots, the DGCA is probing yet another safety lapse by two more of its cockpit crew for landing without permission.

A Boeing 737 from Mumbai, with around 100 people on board, was approaching Rajkot last week, when one of the pilots sought permission of the air traffic control to land on Runway 23.

Seconds later, the second pilot requested to land on Runway 9, official sources said.

Soon thereafter, the ATC asked the pilots for a confirmation on which runway they wanted to land.

The cockpit crew did not respond but landed on Runway 23 even before permission to do so was granted, they said, adding that the landing was safe though.

A Jet spokesperson said, "This particular report has been referred to the regulator and Jet Airways will continue to adhere and abide by the recommendations as directed by the DGCA."

Maintaining that safety was of paramount importance, the spokesperson said, "We wish to reiterate that, in line with international practices, Jet Airways encourages voluntary confidential reporting to promote a healthy safety culture."

Earlier, the private airline had suspended a commander for allowing a trainee pilot to take over from the co-pilot to land a plane in Mumbai, endangering all those onboard.

The aviation regulator had asked Jet to take action against the pilot and the chief of its flight safety in connection with the incident that had taken place last October.
