A Bargain for KAL

I've been here at KAL (Korean Air) for a short time now and can't help but notice how cheap KAL is getting their Foreign Captains. Considering our colleagues at CX Passenger Fleet are taking home approximately $6000.00 per month more pay, get significantly more per diem and have 6 weeks vacation per year, the managers at KAL must be chuckling all the way to Shinhan Bank.

I don't know what other carriers are actually paying for heavy fleet command, but I doubt KAL is far from the bottom. ( EK boys just got a reasonable bonus and raise....they certainly deserved it)

Cheap

I am just wondering when you joined KAL ? There was no pay rise in 2008, 2009 and 2010 on all Fleet Types. So short time at KAL....

The local Pilots are also leaving in a significant number and that still does not ring a bell that the climate is not the best there.

I am out soon there. I decided a while ago to persue another Job and my days are up on the penisula. I am not angry or disappointed as I was left alone the last 3 years and had not expirienced the backstabbing like others but I have seen many Guy´s coming and going, trying and failing. Time to say good bye, aneyo Hanguk. When I am on the other side I can tell you where the grass is greener.

I have crossed the ponds often enough and seen Alaska and the Pole a few times, got 17 time zones crossing in 2 days forward / backward a few times the month and not paid for the time in the Sky. That is cheap as well.

Fly safe and land happy

B737NG..

I've been here at KAL less than 2 years. I'm starting to look elsewhere as well but have not settled on anything as yet. I expect as airlines begin to increase hiring, T's and C's will improve, but I do not understand why KAL is not improving there's. A few of my colleagues have left and others are actively seeking other jobs.

Keep the blue side up ..

Heard that 6 resigned this month on the triple. 3 locals, hopefully more in order for T n Cs to improve.
I joined mid 2000, was hoping that the salary will increase. Unfortunately, it didnt, and it wont. Too many chaps are scrambling to join, not for pay, but for lifestyle, at least that's what was said.
I must have been ruined by KAL in terms of my "Sop", couldnt pass 2 interviews with 2 other national carriers. guess Im stuck here for good till I find another that let me head back to east coast of USA for home leave.
Man I wish I was younger.

$13000.00,.. no flight pay, almost zero chance of overtime, no provident/pension pay, no medical coverage, no loss of license, 24 days vacation, etc....

Very, very cheap for Korean Air......

Resigned recently as well.

Not paid well enough to put up with the the former F-5 pilots who can't land on the centerline to save their lives, yet yell when I don't make a callout the millisecond they think it should be made.

Follow a bad PAR down to 200feet when you had the runway in sight 5 miles back?

The Standsted mentality is alive and well.

"not for pay, but for lifestyle"

You wonder what kind of miserable life one must have to consider the KAL commute a good lifestyle...

Being away 18 consecutive days from the family every month. Take away the travel day and a reasonable adjusting to the local time and you have 7-8 quality days at home. And, to get this you have no leave left. This life for 13000 US?

If you are single and/or unemployed I guess it's doable but I wouldn't touch that contract with a 10 feet pole.

No wonder they are always recruiting. I guess it's getting more and more difficult for them to find the crew they need.

Something else that folks should be aware of is the overall earnings throughout the life of the contract, you have to subtract $14,000USD that you will pay for the type rating plus all the cost of your accommodation during such training event and also consider the reduced income (about 50%) during the 3 to 4 months you will be at training with KAL, training that has a typical 50% to 80% failure rate (according to the posts of some of their pilots here at PPrune) well, if you are furloughed I guess! but otherwise NOT

What you should watch for is how many management "spies" are there, eager to report back

Kimchee, you compare your renumeration with that of your colleagues at CX yet you neglect to mention it takes (at present) 12 years to get to such a position in CX, as opposed to you employed into the LHS some 2 years ago.
Apples v oranges---- non?
If you want a Cx package, join as an S/O.

What a f**ked up system CX, QF, BA, etc employ?!!

Imagine a specialist or surgeon starting as an intern again; what kind of archaic jurassic practices these silly legacy airlines keep to this day?

"In terms of SOP" They say you fly solo when flying for KAL. Everyone for themselves and nobody talks to you.

Flying solo?

That's true when you get an f/o who gets tongue-tied and brain freezed just at the most busy time in a rapid fire ATC moment in JFK; the so - called " safety pilot " just enjoy the moment silently without hardly a clue as to what's going on.....that's flying in KAL SOMETIMES, which may become QUITE OFTEN.

It will be interesting to see how many local guys from KAL and Asiana are looking for other opportunities.

SM
Forgive my ignorance but why would a local KAL or Asiana pilot move to a Middle East airline?

Most of the younger Korean pilots dream of opportunities of giving their children an overseas English education away from the pressure cooker Korean system. The sandpit and SEAsian offer such opportunities. The older pilots ( mostly ex-military ) have children who have already graduated ( and hence do no longer need the company's scholarships ), and most are unsure if their company will extend their contracts beyond 60...so most do plan to leave before the age 58 cut off point employed by most arlines on recruiting drives. However the older pilots generally leave for China or Japan as their standard of spoken and written English are dodgy at best. The Korean airlines have been pretty mean to the local pilot force ever since the last strike action by the pilots where their government connived with the airlines to clip their feathers.

Calvin, you seem to be an insider at KAL; how about recommending the KAL boys to go to India...good standard of English with world class medical facilities and excellent international schools for their kids. Indians generally admire the Koreans for their prowess in the electronics, automobile and shipbuilding.

Hmmmm.....don't know about that but judging from this essay written by an Indian Civil Servant candidate, I don't think so!

Ha ha ha.......what a lovely hilarious essay!

Mrs & Ms Langka just couldn't stop laughing when I showed them this... " More so the milk. Milk comes from 4 taps attached to his basement "
