Safety Board to investigate Batavia Air's strayed plane

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Sat, 02/28/2009 5:13 PM | National
The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) will deploy a special team to investigate the navigation equipment on board a Batavia Air Boeing 737-300 which veered off course yesterday, tempointeraktif.com reports.

KNKT's head for air transportation division Fran Wenas said Saturday the team would check whether the wind force controls caused a commercial flight headed for Pontianak, W. Kalimantan, to stray as far as Ketapang before landing at Pontianak's Supandio airport.

“We'll find out poor weather or navigation equipment were major causes of the accident,” he said.

He said his office had received information on the plane's belated landing because it had flown “off track”.

“We have yet to receive a complete report on the accident and expect to get the preliminary findings within a week,” he said.

The Boeing 737-300, carrying 125 passengers from Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport 7 p.m., was scheduled to arrive at Pontianak on Saturday at 9:30 p.m..

However, the plane strayed from its flight plan and was sighted in Ketapang, some 350 kilometers from Pontianak. It arrived in Pontianak thirty minutes late. The pilot has blamed poor weather.
