Arrow Malaysia Airlines starts new low cost carrier airline.

Malaysia Airlines finally jumps on low cost carrier subsidiary bangwagon.
Firefly, a fully owned subsidiary of MAS to fly six routes
Another low-cost carrier called Firefly will take to the skies from April 2. It will be based at the Penang International Airport.
FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd, a 100% subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, will initially fly six routes.
The routes are from Penang to Langkawi, Kota Baru, Kuala Terengganu and Kuantan for the domestic destinations and from Penang to Koh Samui and Phuket for the regional destinations.
For a start, the airline will use two 50-seater Fokker planes to fly to Phuket and Koh Samui seven times a week, while it will fly 14 times weekly to Kota Baru, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan and Langkawi.
As for the airfare, MAS managing director Idris Jala said: “It will start from as low as RM9, slightly more than the price of a plate of nasi kandar.”
In presenting the operating licence to Idris at his office here yesterday, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the new airline would promote Penang as the country’s hub for low-cost carriers in the northern region.
“Except for the Penang-Langkawi routes, the domestic destinations are currently not being serviced by any other airline, so Firefly will fill the niche and boost connectivity in the north.
“This connectivity will further boost tourist arrivals, particularly to achieve our 20 million target during Visit Malaysia 2007, as well as enhance economic development within the Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand growth area in the long term.
“MAS’ decision to set up this carrier is the result of earlier discussions between the airline and the ministry on how they can improve their network for the Visit Malaysia Year,” he told reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting.
With Firefly joining the stable, the country will now have six airlines. The others are Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Berjaya Air, Transmile and Fly Asian Xpress.
Idris said Firefly – tagged the community airline – was aimed at serving people staying in places previously not served by any airline.
“But MAS cannot do it because of the higher operating costs for us. So we have to set up this new airline.
“It will be a win-win situation for everybody. However, this airline will have an entirely new managing team and business model, all of which will be announced on March 17 in Penang,” he said, adding that MAS expects to achieve profit from the Firefly's operations from next year.

Fire The Fly

The name Firefly says it all, it just glow in the dark then disappear. MAS is just doing what it does best, spending money that is not theirs. Their business plan is if you can't beat them joint them. But if they can't run MAS properly, then this new airline is just another way to make it seem as if they have management skill, NOT!!!

I would not totally dismiss MAS these days, she has become a different animal under the helmsmanship of the "Kelabit Warrior"

I think this chap is the first Chief Executive in a long time that has no hidden agenda and is remodeling MAS's buisness head on. It must be tough to be out numbered and the new kid on the block but I measure his success on the share price and well lets admit that it has doubled since November last year. Therefore if I compare the relative gains to airasia's stagnant share pool of 1.40 to 1.80 its a no brainer that there is more investor confidance in MAS than airasia. My advice to MAS is to look closely at the Aerlingus Ryan Air mistakes and learn from that. Let airasia choke on their airbus deal it just might be a case of too big for one's boots.

Nope...not questioning the ability of the "Kelabit Warrior" at all...

But knowing MAS ( who never learnt from their own history a.k.a melayu mudah lupa ) once Mr.Jala is no more around..and the reign is taken over by some internal fella...everything will come tumbling down again

You're there C.wooblah (or are you still there..? ) you know how it was.

I hope I'm wrong tho'... lets just hope for the best.

South Asia and the Far East Forums - HM Aerospace (thread) - Page 2

Asian Frog - "Yes, if you have a Type Rating maybe you will be accepted by Transmile and Maybe only. Few months ago there were few examples of success. But TODAY, I know a former MFA FI, (with a lot of hours and a good guy) very dedicated to join Transmile, with a full Malaysian Licence in his pocket (CA6, CA2...)in plus of his European and FAA licences: who cannnot join Transmile because the priority is Malaysian cadets, protectionism of DCA (Info old of one month only)
So to a young European (If I understand the profile, it is the case of MASTERD), what is his future with a Malaysian Licence? Master D has already difficulties to pay his licence, obviously he cannot offer a type rating: NO CHANCE TO JOIN WITH NO TR and NO HOURS an Airlines in Malaysia. Joining a school as FI in Malaysia, DCA will reject you if you have not enough instructional hours. With your Malaysian Licence (dry, no TR ,no hours) where are you going to find a job as Malaysia will not accept you, including in the schools because you have NO INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS: tell me what is the utility to get a Malaysian licence? NIL
About a conversion of your licence with no TR and no hour??? a dead end.
Master D, I have a deep experience of Civil Aviation and Training, I just try to avoid you do a big mistake
My advice:
MASTER D find a school in Europe, do your JAR licence, integrated or Modular, do your FI rating and then you will have a job in one school anywhere in the world for building your hours and pay your TR. A JAR licence is of a highest value that the Malaysian one, you should find a job a lot easily. Check all around you"

confirm finals - "It's not transmile stopping expats, it's an order from DCA that NO MORE expats will be employed!!! Expats already working for transmile (FO's not captains) have been told as of last week that work permits MAY NOT be extended due to the increasing amount of cadet pilots coming from MFA etc."

It's obvious isn't it anywhere in the world that locals should have priority... What's the point being a local then (not only in Malaysia or in aviation for that matter) if you can't even find a job whilst an expat job is secured..???

Tough luck, but that's reality..just have to go with the flow..

Latest that I had talked with an Expat Captain ( B737) that his contract has been extended from Apr 07- March 08 whilst most of other expats, their 3 year contract ends Mar 08 with possibility of renewal. Another wave of Capt and copilot are leaving for Etihad but most are B737 junior commanders since Etihad are taking in non rated drivers now. Last count for interview with Etihad are in excess of 50.
So the expats can rest easy knowing MAS will keep them due uncertainties in manpower planning. Those of you who dreams to join MAS as expat or DEC Capt and FO may stop your dream now cos there are no plans at all for that to happen.Lots of senior FO waiting in queue for Command slots, with streams of Cadet coming back from Flying schools to replace junior FOs going up to widebodies to replace those coming down for command.

Firefly??.......seen their working papers and business model, looks viable.......we'll wait and see........
