New Delhi Housing situation

Need some help on this one. Thinking about relocating to India (New Delhi) in the next year depending on job offers and T&C's. Bought a map the other day, and the areas of interest for me would be Gurgaon, Vasant Vihar, or Chanakyapuri. Could anyone local or otherwise tell me what the approximate driving distances are (time wise) from these areas to the airport.

Also will be looking for a 4 bedroom/3 bath house or flat as they say in India. What can one expect to pay in these areas per month? Do most require a deposit and advance rent? Do most sign a year lease?

Gurgaon is very popular with expats....mainly beacause of all the new apartment complexes....its easy to get a good place on rent...furnished or otherwise....lotsa malls and cinemas for the family....with the new expressway almost done....traffic has eased up a bit....driving time now would be about....15-20 mins depending where u stay in gurgaon.

Vasant Vihar.....posh....lotsa diplomats etc etc...nice market place.....lotsa eating joints....cinema...etc....driving time about 10-15 mins depending on rush hour....

Chankya Puri....most embassies located there hence lotsa diplomats again....nice area....roads...greenery....driving time about 10-15 mins

Rents:
Gurgaon ---> Furnished Rs 40,000 to 90,000
Unfurnished upto Rs 40,000

Vasant Vihar ---> Expensive place to stay....expect rents to be atleast in the range of Rs 60,000 to 1,00,000

Most leases for 11 + 11 months.....
Most require a 6 month security deposit plus 1 month advance rent.

Delhi Rents

Thanks for the information JetSetting. Any expats with family in New Delhi? How is the airline handling the housing. I know Jet is offering $1800/month for housing, but based on the info if you are expected to come up with 6 months rent as a deposit plus a months rent in advance, that would be quite a chunk of change to have to cough up around $12,500 just to move in!

I know lot of guys who've got family with them....infact a brazilian stays right in my apartment complex.....

If u take a company lease then you wont have to pay any deposits.....maybe a 1 month security deposit at the max.

As far as Jet goes...they've got ppl here who'll take you around...show you some apartments.....and then u can take a company lease.

Housing in Delhi

Thanks for the info--It's nice to know JetAirways helps out the lads in the context of housing. Out of curiosity are the company leases just for 2 bedroom/2bath flats? Or can you get something bigger. Do most of the Jet pilots live in Gurgaon? What are the names of some of the good Intl schools for expats other than the embassy schools?

Housing DEL

NG Fellow,

Regarding the accomodation in Delhi, It all depends on where you are coming from and what kind of standards you are looking for . In Gurgaon you will be able to find a nice affordable flat in a multi storey building, but the area around might look like a war zone !!!!! and depending on the time it might take you 45 min or more to go to the airport . As far as I know two international schools available in Gurgaon, one is called Pathway int'l and is kind of far away and in middle of nowhere not sure of the other .
In Delhi area like Vasant Vihar, Anan nikethan, Golf links etc.. are very nice but a fully furnished flat in a very good condition will cost you more than 120 000 INR for sure ! And I would strongly suggest that you check with the schools first, as British and US schools in Chanakiapuri both had waiting list last I checked . Schools in gurgaon should have space available .
Last I heard Jet is changing the accomodation policy and I don't think they still have company accomodation . So you'll have to find one on your own . The company will assist you in contacting and arranging for you to see flats, but you will have to sign the lease . Jet will give you 1800$/m plus 200 INR for bills . For the deposit it has changed and I think this is as follow : jet will pay up to 250 000 inr and anything above this you'll have to pay or jet will advance the amount and retain it from your salary .

Hope this helps and good luck !

ps : have your wife have a look first before you bring her down there ...

Housing/Schools

Thanks for the input. The American School in Delhi is very expensive. Almost $18,000 USD per year with no discounts for multiple children attending! The British School is a bit more reasonable but still expensive. Both have wait lists. The other Indian International schools are much cheaper but I am not sure how "International" they really are--perhaps in name only. I have come across Pathways, Goenka World School and Excelsior. Research is still ongoing.

Mumbai ?

Are the costs for nice furnished apartments in Mumbai equvalent to New Dehli? That is, those in a good district a reasonable drive from the airport?

Which district would most of the ex-pats live in around the airport in Mumbai?

Thanks for may information

Housing

So if you have to work 6 days a week, where would be the best place to live? i.e. shortest commute to work and decent area. Are there places right near the airport worth considering? How spread out is Gurgaon? Are there specific areas to look for in Gurgaon (or specific apartment complexes). What about independent villas? Are they safe? How do you get a servant in India? through an agency? Is there a minimum wage?
