A-net Info
Does anyone have any good info on contractors for A-net in Japan? I'm typed in the Dash-8 and am really interested in applying there.
Thanks in advance!

Dear Cafe,
I left ANet a while ago, but I don't think anything has changed. The money is OK and reliable, but I don't recommend the job unless you are starving.
The contract is basically 42 days on, 18 off. In the 42 days you will have 6-7 days off, about 25 nights away and fly about 120-140 hours. Usually you finish late before your day off and start early on the morning after. They also don't tell you that you will be given "standby" days when you have to sit in the office in uniform in case they need a pilot, but don't get paid for it.
You can do what you like on you 18 days off, but you will probably lose 3-4 days travelling to anywhere else. They offer zed fares but you will need to buy your own ticket if you want to travel in the summer season or christmas/new year. If you get bumped off a flight and don't get back it gets nasty with red letters and pay deductions. They also will try to change your vacation dates when it suits them.
Most of the Japanese pilots have limited english - these are the guys that will train you. Enough for normal operations, but things fall apart quickly in abnormal situations. Also CRM is only used in the class and you don't want to be copilot with them. BTW there is a lot of co-captain scheduled, so 40% of your flying will be in the right seat.
The Japanese are incredibly anal about all sorts of stupid stuff and you will get sick of all the checking. They only care about getting the aircraft out on time, not about safety.
Read the contract carefully - you will only get what is written there, not one yen more.
Good Luck!
Joe

How's a typical day go at A-net? In particular:
1. Average number of sectors flown in a day, and how long?
2. Where are the overnights, and how many days away from base on a given trip?
3. How are the rest periods? Do you finish late then start early the next day, or is it a fairly consistent AM or PM type of schedule? How about on overnights?
4. How is the basic quality of life? Are the days generally too long to do anything but work, or do you still have enough free time during your duty rotation to get out and enjoy Osaka a little bit? Would my wife (Japanese) kill me for being AWAY too much, or would she kill me for being HOME too much?
5. How's the tax situation for a US citizen planning on living in Japan for the duration of the contract?
6. What's the basic company culture like? How is it dealing with the Japanese maintnence crew / flight crew / etc.? Are gaijin pilots treated well or looked down upon?
7.Would you recommend it, and anything else worth knowing that the contract companies might not be saying?
Thanks!

Abu Dhabi Air is 8 weeks on and only 4 off? I assume your travel time from any domicile in the world probably comes out of your 4 weeks also. Anyone work there and will they look at non-type-rated guys for the right seat?
