Major news event in Japan!

Pilot in traffic jam; JAL flights cut

KOBE (Kyodo) A Japan Airlines flight from Kobe to Kagoshima and the return flight were canceled Tuesday morning because the captain could not get to Kobe airport on time, JAL said.

The captain got stuck in a traffic jam caused by an accident when he was heading to the airport by taxi from his home in Osaka Prefecture, according to the carrier.

The captain should have arrived at Kobe airport by 7 a.m. but was about 90 minutes late, JAL said.

The roughly 70 passengers who were supposed to take the 8 a.m. Kobe-Kagoshima flight traveled to Kagoshima aboard an All Nippon Airways plane.

JAL apologized for the inconvenience, saying it normally has substitute captains available at major airports, but not at Kobe airport.
