Question SriLankan Airlines

Puzzle me this....

SriLankan are looking for crews at the moment. Any expats who have or do work for them have any comments on life at the airline?

Thanks in advance

In my view.

Not a bad operator - reasonable maintenance, friendly cabin staff and variety of routes. Emirates owns half and so keep an eye on it. I met some very nice people from the company. But the location....

You might see brochures of pristine beaches and beautiful forested mountains, etc but that is nowhere near your base. IMHO Colombo has to be one of the worst places to live I have seen. (Perhaps why they are often looking?).

It really is the 3rd world, so remember that before you get romantic ideas about it. Like many large south asian cities it is polluted, dirty, noisey, overcrowded and poor. It you can handle it then not a bad place to get some hours or save some $ as the cost of living can be very low. Long term - cars are very expensive, there are a few old UK style private schools (hungover from colonial period), and there are a few nice / expat std shops and cafes (<10). If you got on longer haul you could perhaps consider living at one of the nice tourist beaches like Trincomalee or Hikaduwa but these are half a days travel from KAT (Intl airport).

I recommend you try to make your assessment or plans around living outside Colombo; a popular choice is "Negombo" (A littered beach 10 mins from airport - has a few tourists overnighting before departing SL, and thus a few cafes & hotels, enough shops, etc), it is far better than living in Colombo city. There is a nice inner city suburb (Colombo 7 or "Cinnamon Gardens") but the trip to work from there is often between 1-2 hours through crazy and usually dangerous traffic. (Without doubt the worst drivers I have ever seen).

Its not all bad and can be an interesting experience, but having done it once it would take a lot to move me back there...

Good luck.

Devil sri lankan airlines

DEAR ALL INTERESTED IN JOINING SRI LANKAN

this airline started as air lanka in 1979 until ithas had its route network clipped by emirates.

many are jumping ship as they pay peanuts and get monkeys.

the locals are leaving to other regional carriers.

they are so short they are finding it hard to maintain rosters but great place to renew licence or gain a type rating.
country too is politically unstable. security in doubt.

think a minute your future depends on it.

good luck

Tutaewera,

I was there in the mid 80s, and your message could have been written then and be applicable!

Pilot in legal battle grounded

A SriLankan Airlines pilot has been grounded by the management after he refused to withdraw a letter of demand sent to a senior officer, demanding Rs. 25 million.

Captain R.L. Jayasinghe has been grounded after he sent the letter of demand to Senior Manager Flight Operations, Capt. Milida Ratnayake, who is alleged to have made a statement to the Director Civil Aviation that Capt. Jayasinghe was not qualified to be considered for a training on A340 aircraft as disciplinary inquiry was pending against him.

Capt Jayasinghe has refused to withdraw the letter of demand on the grounds that it was filed by him in a private capacity and therefore the management cannot demand the withdrawal of the letter.

The management early this month agreed to complete Capt. Jayasinghe’s A340 route check and provide him with sufficient sectors in A 340. He has also been assured that he would be reverted to A 320 as a Line Captain.
