Good evening,
If anyone has any information regarding the 747-400 hiring, the interview process and the 5 year training bond, please respond.

As an applicant to SQ cargo, it looks a semi acceptable deal, then a guy working
there tells me I will have to apply to leave Singapore on days
off.
Apparently Emirates have a similar arrangement, you must
apply to fleet management to leave Dubai on days off.
No contract is worth doing with the condition that I ask my
employer's permission to have my days off elsewhere.
To SQ and EK management I say UP YOURS!
Your conditions are unreasonable.

A bit trigger happy with the viotriol there chaps. I have just seen my SIA Cargo contract and not only is there no mention of what you refer to but I happen to know that some new hires are planning on commuting from Australia and others are planning on living in Malaysia. I mentioned this at interview and was told that it wouldn't be a problem.

Commuting in your own time off has been going on for years, Perth was the No.1 unofficial base, equal with Kuala Lumpa and Brisbane as the second.
Just don't miss a flight or Stand-By call out, that's all. There is a form to be filled in, most of the guys dropped it into the internal mail as they were leaving the airport to go to their home. Just don't stuff up.
Boofta, with the attitude you display you are much better off not going to SQ, if it wasn't the days off etc. it would be something else.

Why isn't all this going on on the Far East forum?
As an employee of SQ ( although not on the cargo contract) and mindful of how they have driven coaches and horses through contracts over the past two years, I wouldn't trust them as far as I can spit.
If you're based in SIN and contemplate commuting any distance, dream on. They consider you to be available 365 days a year; don't arrange anything too important in your 'days off'.
The remuneration associated with the latest version of the contract doesn't seem that bad but don't forget Bond and Bank Guarantee. Also, rumour has it that blokes in the last two months of their contract are finding they haven't been paid - in case they default on any debts still owing in SIN!
Tread very carefully.

When you leave SIA you get a package of information that tells you all the jobs you have to do and places you have to go to get cleared. It states in the package that between one and three months salary MAY be witheld to cover your tax liability, if you have already taken care of that you will be paid in the normal way.
Depending on when you leave some monies owing to you will take a few months to arrive in your bank account, which is why you are advised to leave you Singapore bank account open. Pro rata share of bonus, back pay, thirteenth month, stuff like that, they don't work it all out and pay you the day you leave, they pay it when everyone else gets paid it!

When you join SQ Cargo in August and get on line you will soon discover that trying to commute from Australia is a no goer ( on cost alone) if nothing else.
Depending how long your trip away is depends on how many consecutive days off you get after the trip. If you are only entitled to say 3 days then that is what you get. You could then get a standby then another days off as well.Woe betide you if you stay in OZ and take a chance you won't be called out!!! Don't forget they have your Bank Guarantee money and you have signed your life away for 5 years from being on line.
What is this continual talk about basing yourself in Malaysia and commuting to Singapore? Whilst you could do this more easily what exactly are you gaining? I don't think JB is much of a place personally.

To address one fact in isolation -
The primary reason for company "permission" to leave the country in the case of foreigners / expats lies in the fact that SIA is the employee's sponsor at immigration, and require you to be contactable if you exit Singapore on Days Off. This condition does not apply during leave.
Notwithstanding this, ALL staff, Singaporean or not are required to provide a contact phone number when absent from Singapore. It is not permission per se, as outlined in the Flight Administration Manual, but a simply a requirement to be contactable. Protocol requires that your department head be notified, but in the absence of any supervisory staff, e.g. on the weekend, notification to Crew Scheduling suffices. Hardly permission!

Old Smokey

Smokey you old buggar
What happens if SQ Cargo find out you have been out of SIN
without telling anyone. If there are serious consequences for
failing to tell them e.g. an apology or disciplinary problems, then
your argument of hardly permission is spurious.
It just seems a slight imposition to HAVE to leave contact details
and when and where you are at all times.
If SQ Cargo insists in any way to know your contact details, it
implies you are in the POO for not telling them. Thats "Permission"
and hardly acceptable for adult pilots.

boofta,
I've no idea what happens if you exit Singapore without leaving a contact because I've never done it. I would imagine some sort of rebuff because it's a requirement, as outlined in the FAM, to provide a contact number.
I FREQUENTLY leave Singapore on Days Off, and simply precede my departure with a call to Crew Scheduling to advise that I'll be away and that my contact number is my normal Mobile Phone number (which has auto-roam).
Everybody, including the boss, knows that I go, no-one has ever given me permission, but I've always ensured that they know that contact is possible through my normal mobile phone number.
The only conversation that I've had with management was with L.C. Yong, who suggested that I use no later than the second last flight to return in case of off-load.
I say again - "Hardly permission!" (Although the FAM does use confusing words).

Old Smokey,
Are you in SIA Cargo? What do u think about them not giving us transport allowance? I queried the CP and the reply was "Since the admin staff don't get paid transport , we shouldn't expect it "
I almost wanted to ask him if the admin staff could fly the MegaArk!
I have a good mine to lug my bags and go home in the MRT. That would make a statement.

If you are of no interest to SIA you can expect to hear quite soon, otherwise you can only hope to hear as and when courses become available. If you meet their requirements that doesn't mean you can expect to hear within any particular time frame.
