From my experience with Vietnam Airlines last year as FO a can say that this environment is not easy. You have to fly with expats, which is in general not a problem at all, but you have also to fly with locals which can be strange and I mean really strange.

Vietnam Airlines is the flag carrier of the country and everything is ruled by the party, they even talk about you and your performance during their monthly party meetings. Maintenance of the Airbus fleet was and is as far as I know not really existing it's more or less only a repair station and the A320's are getting old. Expect to see a lot of MEL items and also expect a lot of fights with the engineers and the local pilots because "it's ok, no problem, we go" and guess who would be blamed if something happens, yes the expat!

Rostering is a pain as you receive usually a two week roster, showing the last week and the week ahead, makes sence?! You get your 6 weeks on 2 weeks off pattern and your ticket home. Last year there have been quite some occasions when pilots got bumped from off duty rotation flights because the flights were overbooked, even as you hold a confirmed ticket. Think about waht might happen to any flights you booked using for example low fare tickets to get from the end- point of VN's network to your place!

If you think about Pacific, you face a cockpit staffed only with expats. So you don't have to work with a guy who is - to get me right not all Vietnamese pilots are like this - constantly concerned to kep his face. Maintenance should be much better as it is done by expat engineers. The reason for this should be that until now all Pacific aircraft are operated under a wet lease contract by Orion Air. I am sure they are not perfect but much better than the flag carrier. For example you usually don't have 4- sector days and no positioning, where you have to wait after a long day another six hours to get on a flight, as the local employees have priority everytime, even if they travel only for their private pleasure.

Finally Pacific or beter Orion upgraded FO to Captain last year, something that was promissed to the Airbus FO's at Vietnam Airlines but never happened and I am sure will never happen. Always keep in mind the party rules and all local FO are party members. But I can understand their point of view, really.

If you want to work in Vietnam and have the option I would go for Pacific.

Even if you are type rated , it is not enough......

You must also have 500 hours on type AND you must be current within the last 6 months.....

Thumbs down

Dear All,
Conditions gently sliding downhill, but still a nice agency to work for.
But too much pressure, rumours of Agency, Orion closing down every 6 months. At this time 3 Aircrafts on the ground, coz lessor not paid.
Cheers
